A sole proprietor never registered for HST. When did the obligation start?

2026-10-03 · 6 min read · Tax Everyday, Vaughan

The obligation starts when you cease to be a small supplier, not when you feel ready to register. For most sole proprietors that is the $30,000 taxable-supplies test: more than $30,000 in one calendar quarter, or more than $30,000 across four consecutive calendar quarters. Taxi and rideshare businesses are the important exception and generally register from the first fare. Everyone else should measure the rolling quarters before deciding they are “still small.”

Your T1 does not file your HST. The business profit goes on form T2125 inside the personal return. The HST you were required to collect goes on GST/HST returns under a business number. Filing five late T1s and ignoring registration leaves the larger trust debt sitting beside a finished income-tax file. Clients are surprised by that split. CRA is not.

Find the start date on a single page

List taxable sales by quarter for every year you have been operating. Mark the first quarter the rule was broken. That quarter is the start of the conversation.

  • Use invoices if you have them. Use deposits only to fill gaps, and say which is which.
  • Do not net out expenses. The threshold is supplies.
  • If you charged HST without registering, you still have to remit what you collected. Charging it was not optional once you printed it on the invoice.
  • If you never charged it, and you should have, the tax can be assessed out of the price you did charge.
  • Input tax credits from the mandatory-registration date may soften the bill. Older personal purchases will not.

Two prices, because there are two filings

A ready self-employed personal year is $650 plus HST at Tax Everyday. That is the T1 and the T2125. It is not a multi-year HST registration and a stack of GST34s. Those are quoted from the quarter you crossed the line. Book one appointment for both, so the income and the HST use the same sales number. Using two different sales numbers is the mistake that creates a review.

Drop the quarterly totals. If you do not have them, drop the bank statements and say so.

Short answers

I file my personal taxes every year. Doesn’t CRA already have this?+

CRA has your profit if you reported it. That is income tax. HST is a separate registration and a separate return. Reporting $80,000 of business income on a T2125 does not register you for HST.

Can I register today and only charge HST going forward?+

You can register today. If the threshold was crossed years ago, CRA can set the effective date back. Going forward is additional. It is not a substitute for the back periods.
