How do you file several years of HST returns in Ontario?

2026-10-06 · 6 min read · Tax Everyday, Vaughan

Each reporting period gets its own return. If you were an annual filer, that is one return per fiscal year. If you were quarterly or monthly, the pile is larger, and every empty period is still a period. Ontario HST is 13% on taxable supplies made in the province. The return reports HST collected, input tax credits you are allowed to claim, and the net you remit or the refund you claim. A year with no activity is a nil return, not a year you skip.

The late-filing penalty is 1% of the amount owing plus 0.25% for each complete month the return is late, up to 12 months, plus interest. If nothing is owing, that penalty is generally nil. The return is still late, and a registrant who stops filing eventually gets assessed or gets the account closed in a way that is harder to fix than filing would have been.

Build one worksheet per period

Do not try to file “2021 to 2025” as a single number. CRA’s system will not take it, and the input-tax-credit time limit is counted by period.

  • Confirm the filing frequency on the registration. Guessing annual when you were quarterly creates a mismatch.
  • Sales: taxable at 13%, zero-rated, and exempt, in separate columns. They are not all HST-able.
  • HST collected: what you actually charged. If you were required to charge and did not, measure the tax carefully rather than picking a number.
  • Input tax credits: HST on business expenses, with invoices that show the supplier’s registration. A bank total is not an invoice.
  • File in period order when the balances connect. A refund period CRA can still pay is worth flagging.

What we need from you

The business number, the reporting frequency, and the worksheets or the source documents. Tax Everyday quotes a multi-year HST catch-up from the number of periods and the quality of the invoices. For a corporation whose year is otherwise ready, HST support sits inside the $2,000 plus HST corporate package. A drawer of quarterly returns going back to 2019 is a catch-up quote.

Book a time or drop the first and the last period. Those two tell us how the middle behaves.

Short answers

Can I file all the years on paper in one envelope?+

Each period is its own return, whether it is transmitted or paper-filed. One envelope is fine as a way to send documents to us. It is not one return.

I was registered but never charged HST. What do I put on the return?+

You still file. The collected column may be zero and an assessment may still apply if you were required to collect. Bring the sales so the return is not a blank guess.

These notes are general. A return is prepared only after we see your slips.
